Choosing an area rug feels easy until you get it home and realize it looks too small, too big or simply off. Size is the most common rug mistake, and it can make even a beautiful rug look out of place. The good news is that a few simple rules take the guesswork out of it. At NPN Flooring, our family-owned team has helped homeowners across Chicago's western suburbs choose and install flooring for more than 27 years. Here is a room-by-room guide to sizing area rugs in your Naperville home.
Why Rug Size Matters
The right rug size anchors your furniture, defines spaces in open floor plans and makes a room feel balanced. A rug that is too small makes furniture look like it is floating and can make a room feel smaller. A rug that is too large can crowd walls and hide floors you love.
Before You Shop: Measure Your Space
Measure the full room, wall to wall.
Measure your main furniture pieces and note where they sit.
Use painter's tape to outline the rug size on the floor.
Live with the outline for a day or two and adjust as needed.
This simple step prevents most sizing mistakes.
Living Room
The living room is where sizing matters most. There are three common layouts:
All legs on: The rug is large enough for every piece of furniture to sit on it fully. This works well in large Naperville living rooms and open floor plans.
Front legs on: The front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug. This is the most popular approach and works in most rooms.
Floating rug: Only the coffee table sits on the rug. This works in small spaces but can make a room feel disconnected.
In most living rooms, an 8x10 or 9x12 rug works well. Leave 12 to 18 inches of floor between the rug and the walls.
Dining Room
Your dining rug works best when it extends at least 24 inches past the table on every side. This keeps chair legs on the rug when someone pulls out a chair. For a standard six-person table, an 8x10 rug is a good starting point. Round tables look best with round rugs. If your dining room is in an open layout, align the rug with the table and light fixture rather than the walls so the dining zone feels centered and intentional.
Bedroom
For a queen bed, an 8x10 rug placed under the bottom two-thirds of the bed gives you a soft landing on both sides. For a king bed, a 9x12 works well. If you prefer smaller rugs, place a runner on each side of the bed or a single rug at the foot.
Kitchen
Kitchen runners work well in galley kitchens and along islands. Leave a few inches between the runner and the cabinets so doors and drawers open freely. Choose low-pile, washable or stain-resistant rugs for busy kitchens.
Entryways and Mudrooms
Entry rugs take a beating in Naperville winters from snow, slush and road salt. Choose a durable, low-profile rug that lets the front door swing freely. In mudrooms, a larger rug that covers the main walking path catches more dirt before it travels through your home.
Hallways
Runners in hallways leave about 4 to 6 inches of floor showing on each side. They come in standard lengths, but a custom runner can fit a long or oddly shaped hallway exactly.

Open Floor Plans
Many newer Naperville homes feature open layouts that combine living, dining and kitchen areas. Rugs help define each zone. Use a separate rug for each area and keep colors and styles related so the space feels connected. Leave clear walkways between rugs so traffic flows naturally.
Basements and Family Rooms
Finished basements are popular in Naperville homes and often serve as family rooms, playrooms or media rooms. A larger rug softens hard floors and adds warmth. Choose a durable fiber and a moisture-resistant pad for basement spaces.
When a Standard Size Does Not Fit
If your room needs a 7x11 or an 11x15, a standard rug will not work. That is where custom area rugs come in. We can cut carpet to your exact size and bind the edges for a finished look, giving you a rug that fits your room perfectly.
Do Not Forget the Rug Pad
A rug pad keeps the rug from slipping, adds cushion and protects the floor. Choose a pad about an inch smaller than the rug on each side so it stays hidden.

Sizing Rugs for Older Homes and Small Rooms
Not every Naperville home has wide-open rooms. Older homes near downtown often have smaller living rooms, narrow dining rooms and radiators or built-ins along the walls. In these spaces, a 5x8 or 6x9 rug with the front-legs-on layout keeps the room feeling open. Leave a little more floor visible around the edges so the room does not feel cramped, and choose lighter colors to make it feel brighter and larger.
